Neighbors helped rescue others during Park Jefferson Apartment fire

Although fire walls saved an entire Park Jefferson Apartment Building from going down in flames, ultimately fellow neighbors saved each other yesterday.

On Thursday tenants were slowly going back inside their apartments to gather some items.

Just before 1o’clock Wednesday afternoon a fire broke out destroying eight apartments and damaging 24 neighboring ones with water.

Firefighters say it started in a kitchen, leaving tenants out in the cold.

Those displaced tenants are now staying at vacant apartments within the complex.

Some say they are lucky because they have renters insurance and even luckier someone was kind enough to knock on their door and help them get out.

“I'm glad everybody got out safe because they came knocking on our doors and everything,” says James Mendenhall Sr.

“It’s good because neighbors are supposed to come together and help each other,” says tenant Audrey Veen.

Yesterday firefighters say newly installed fire walls helped prevent the fire from spreading.

So in this case only a small section of the entire building was completely ruined.
