Nearly 6,000 fans show up for Silver Hawks' home opener

The South Bend Silver Hawks hit a home run when it comes to attendance on opening day.

Team owner Andrew Berlin says nearly 6,000 people came out to The Cove for the first game of the season Thursday night.

"It was a sell out by the 2nd [inning]," Berlin tweeted. "We were selling standing room only!"

While lots of folks who showed up were baseball fans, many families came for other entertainment.

"I think it's nice we can come to the bouncy house area and take a break from the game because kids want to get off their butts and it gives them something to do," said South Bend resident Nicole Griffin.

To make opening day a true family affair, there was a petting zoo, pony rides and the usual bouncy houses.

Adults also enjoyed the newly-completed tiki bar, which was packed the entire game with people taking advantage of the Thirsty Thursday $1 beers.

It's all part of Berlin's plan to make The Cove a destination that has something for everyone.

He's hopeful the many entertainment options at the stadium will draw more people and more money downtown.

And, South Bend residents say -- so far -- he's on the right track.

"The games are early enough where you can come to the game, have a good time," said South Bend resident Gary Woltman. "Then, you've got the rest of the evening to go downtown and it's a great scenario."
