About 100 people came out on the National Night Out Against Crime. Thousands held outside events throughout the country including one here at Howard Park in South Bend.
People from the surrounding neighborhoods had fun with food, music, and friendship. It's a fun way to stand up against violence and crime and to get to know law enforcement.
"Especially for the kids coming out is that the policemen are their friends, the firemen are their friends,” said Sgt. Pat Hachlinski of the South Bend Police Department. “We're here to help them in an emergency. We want them to feel comfortable to come to us. Same thing for the people in the neighborhood.”
This is the 10th year that South Bend has been participating in this national event. Other communities throughout Michiana also held similar events Tuesday evening.
