Nappanee, Ind. Nappanee already has dozens sites that attract visitors from across the country, and Monday night they added another. Dozens came out to see the very first mum-filled flower carpet in the historic downtown.
Members and volunteers of the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau arranged about 7,000 mums which replicated historic design elements. The committee illuminated the flower carpet for residents and visitors Monday evening after a year of planning, preparation and hard work.
“We just think that this is just another thing that we say is a great place to live, raise a family, go to school, our library,” says Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson. “All those things and we are just adding this to the list of things that you can come to and enjoy. It brings people together. It brings our community together and we are excited about it. It is wonderful."
Elkhart also has a flower carpet. It can be viewed on the Downtown River Walk off Waterfall Drive, between Main and Franklin Streets.
