Schools throughout Michiana reported low attendance on Monday due to a threat against students in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties.

Elkhart community schools report that only about 30 to 40 percent of their 13,000 students were in attendance. The Penn-Harris-Madison Schools said absence rates were just over 32 percent, whereas 58 percent of students in South Bend reportedly did attend school.

Many parents opted to keep their children at home in response to a threat made three months ago claiming children would be the target of violence on April 15.

Police made the threat public last week and increased their presence on school campuses across the area on Monday. The day came and went without any occurrence of violence.
