Miss America visits Michiana

South Bend, Ind. A Michiana native returns home after being crowned Miss America.

Nina Davuluri, who grew up in Southwest Michigan and went to St. Joseph High School, made several stops while she was in the area.

One of those stops was at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Davuluri visited the NICU around 8 a.m. She continued around the hospital making time for pictures, and speaking with students and residents. She sat down with a few of them, asking them questions about their experiences.

As many know, she too, is applying to medical school.

“It's a wonderful experience, especially being able to talk to some of the residents and doctors and hear their experiences,” says Miss America Nina Davuluir. “My degree from undergrad was in Brain Behavior and Cognitive Science. So psychiatry is definitely on the radar but I've been told it will change once I actually start rotating in med school. So we'll definitely keep our options open.”

After a visit at Memorial, she made a stop a Penn High School where she talked to girls about the importance of education.

You may remember one of her main goals is to promote education, specifically STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math.
