Mishawaka police offer community new safety tool

Mishawka police say safety is what their job is all about.

"Our whole goal is to make our community safe to live in because we want people to move to Mishawaka, we want people to start their businesses here, to raise their families," says Lieutenant Tim Williams of the Mishawaka police department.

And to ensure safety in the community, the police department has implemented a new community tool, a website called crimereports.com.

"I believe our citizens are going to benefit the most out of this because one, it's going to give them a chance to get involved without anyone knowing they're involved," says Lt. Williams about the option to anonymously tip off police within the site.

The Mishawaka Police Department switched from Nixle, following suit behind South Bend and Notre Dame who already use the Crime Reports tracking website.

The anonymous tip function benefits police because the public has the ability to report information without worrying about revealing their identity and possible repurcussions. But it also benefits the public. It's free, and can prevent crime in neighborhoods, or help stop it.

"We want to partner with them and help them lower the crime rate in our community. We want to make it safer for them, so we want them to be a part of that solution, and I think this is a great way to do that," says Lt. Williams.

Users are able to track crime in their area by typing in an address or city into the site. They can see reports of theft, assault, even homicide to stay informed.

Wiliams says all in all, "its going to give our citizens a better feeling about their community."
