A quick response from local fire crews put out a fire at Saint Mary's College almost before it started.
A curtain caught fire around the stage at O'Laughlin auditorium around 11 Sunday night. Notre Dame Fire arrived within three minutes, and the building's sprinkler system helped to put out the fire before any serious damage was done.
School administrators say they're relieved no one was inside and grateful for the quick response.
“It's all hands on deck when this kind of thing happens,” Saint Mary’s Director of Media Relations Gwen O'Brien says. “We're very happy to know that no one was apparently inside at the fire, and this type of thing can be fixed."
Broadway star and Private Practice actress Audra McDonald was set to perform in O'Laughlin Auditorium on Monday night.
Saint Mary’s College has moved the event, “An Evening with Audra McDonald,” to the Gillespie Center at the Hilton Garden Inn at the edge of the Saint Mary's campus. The talk by the Grammy and Tony-Award-winning actress is still scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Tickets will be available at the door at the Gillespie. Admission is $10 or free to students, faculty and staff from Saint Mary's, the University of Notre Dame, and Holy Cross College with I.D.
