South Bend Mayor hands out "Hero Packages" to military kids

Children of military families from around South Bend joined Mayor Pete Buttigieg on Tuesday to celebrate “Military Kids Month.”

Buttigieg hosted the event in the mayor’s office, where he read an official proclamation recognizing the sacrifice made by each military family for the sake of the United States.

He said he hoped the event would remind the community of the difficulties the loved ones of service members endure, “I feel like America has gotten better and better at honoring the sacrifices that our troops make, but we don't always think about the sacrifices that we ask these families to make.”

All of the kids in attendance received “Hero Packages” filled with items donated by the city, 4H and the Purdue Extension Office of St. Joseph County.
