Police are investigating whether faulty brakes played a role a tragic accident last month that killed two little Niles girls.

That's according to the Niles Daily Star.

Juliana Brown, 9, and her Sophia True, 6, died in the horrific car wreck on September 11.

Their younger sister, Penelope True, 4, was critically injured but survived the crash, and according to Sergeant Mike Dawson with the Michigan State Police, she's "improving."

The accident happened at the corner of M-60 and Leet Road in Howard Township, Michigan after police say the girls' babysitter, Sarah Michael, 19, of Niles, blew a stop sign, sending the car into the path of an oncoming pick-up truck.

Sergeant Dawson says Michael told police her brakes didn't work, and an investigation found no brake fluid in the vehicle's master cylinder.

Police are now trying to determine whether the master cylinder was empty before or after the crash occurred.

Dawson says so far it looks like brake failure may be to blame, but they need to investigate further before announcing that as the official cause.
