LANSING, Mich.--- Michigan has launched its expanded Medicaid plan to provide health insurance for hundreds of thousands of low-income adults.

The state started enrollment Tuesday for Healthy Michigan, which extends Medicaid eligibility to people making up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level.

The Department of Community Healthy says it received about 12,000 applications by 4 p.m. Tuesday, and about 4,000 of them were automatically approved.

The department says enrollment went smoothly throughout the day, with people applying at state offices and accessing the website without major issues.
