Michiana's largest non-for-profit animal rescue group has taken the first step to moving into a new shelter.
Monday night Pet Refuge received unanimous approval from the South Bend City Council to rezone the property on the city's south side, where the group plans to move.
Right now the "no kill" shelter is located on 6th Street in Mishawaka, but the staff says they have outgrown their current facility. The new shelter has passed all necessary inspections.
Monday night the zoning ordinance was approved clearing the way for Pet Refuge's new home. Now the capital campaign will raise money to make the shelter animal friendly.
