Michiana triathlete "Steve-O" dies after battle with brain cancer

Granger A well-known world champion tri-athlete, coach, teacher, and Michiana resident has died after a long battle with brain cancer.

Steve Smith, fondly known as "Steve-O" has been a big inspiration to the community. He was diagnosed with Glioblastoma in April 2012.

His dream was to help more local kids get active through athletics, regardless of their physical, mental or financial barriers -- with the "Racing for Steve-O Foundation".

Thursday night on the foundation’s Facebook page -- family and friends announced he had crossed his final finish line, passing away peacefully.

The foundation just held its first ever Barron Lake Triathlon this past weekend in Niles. They hope to make it an annual event.
