Michiana school district working to increase student numbers

Benton Harbor, Mich. A Michiana school system is working to recruit students back to the district.

Benton Harbor area schools have faced serious financial troubles over the past few years. But officials say they've made positive changes, and for the second straight year, the district has not only balanced its budget, but it's also paid down part of its long-term debt.

The school system hopes that progress will attract students back to their classrooms as volunteers spread the word in local neighborhoods.

“So we are trying to get the message out that Benton Harbor Schools are your school of choice,” says Maurice Scott an enrollment management team member. “We made some changes, we really everyone to know what's going on. Hopefully we can retain our students and also gain some students that have gone to other districts in the previous years.”
