Efforts are underway to make South Bend a better "looking" place to live.
The skywalk that connects Memorial Hospital with a medical office building to the east is getting a make-over.
The skywalk is considered a signature site for those entering downtown South Bend from the north.
Newscenter 16 obtained access to this architectural rendering of what the new arched skywalk will look like.
“It will dramatically change the look of the bridge,” says David Relos, a South Bend redevelopment specialist. “The building, right now I think some people refer to it I think as a box car. I mean it certainly serves its function and it is attractive but this will certainly enhance it more.”
The new skywalk will be covered in tinted glass.
The 800-thousand dollar city funded project also calls for putting a new façade on the skyway building itself.
The money comes from the medical district TIF account.
