Meals on Wheels looking for volunteers and donations

It's a program that delivers meals to those that are home-bound, and while the need for the program is greater than ever, their funding is down.

Meals on Wheels has announced that for the first time they have started a waiting list.

Meals on Wheels helps older adults by delivering meals to their homes if they are not able to prepare the food themselves or leave their home.

Last year, the program delivered nearly 150,000 meals to 700 people.

Every year the number of clients has gone up.

However, this year the funding for the program has gone down. That includes sources such as state and federal government funding, plus private donations.

It's the same for the number of volunteers, which has slowly declined.

Leaders say Meals on Wheels may soon have to turn people away.

“That's one of the very toughest things you have to do,” says REAL Services’ Director of Nutrition and Transportation. “Because we have clients that rely on you when they absolutely have to have to you. They will only call you when they can no longer feed themselves.”

There are 22 Meals on Wheels routes in St. Joseph County alone, but the program serves a total of five counties.
