Mayor Buttigieg discusses wiretapping investigation, economy

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is once again under fire for the demotion of Police Chief Darryl Boykins in the wiretapping investigation.

Mayor Buttigieg is being accused of demoting Boykins and others because of their race. Boykins' attorney has filed a tort claim notice on his behalf.

Friday morning Mayor Buttigieg joined Tricia Sloma on 16 Morning News to talk about that and other issues in our "Monthly Chat with the Mayor".

"Obviously I did not act in the reasons that have been suggested," said Mayor Buttigieg.

"I would be very interested to know what is on the tapes. I have yet to have any lawyer explain to me how I can do it in a way that is legal," he said.

Mayor Buttigieg discussed Thursday's economic summit which focused on the future of South Bend and its economy.

"We explained who does what in the new economic framework to make sure people can get answers and results when they are ready to create jobs in South Bend," said Mayor Buttigieg.

He also responded to a comment by a WNDU Facebook friend, Judy, who asked if the mayor's job is what he expected.

"It is the best job in the world," said Buttigieg, "you have a chance at least somedays for somebody to come to you with a big problem in their lives, and you can fix it."
