Man sentenced for drunk driving death of friend
A Goshen man convicted in the death of a friend for driving under the influence of marijuana has received his sentence.
According to reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, 21-year-old Cornelius Watkins will serve two years of home detention and four years on probation. His license is also suspended for four years.
Watkins was driving on U.S. 33 last November when he fell asleep and hit a pole near Concord Mall Drive. Darnell Cassell was seriously injured in the accident. Aaron Jet died.
Watkins was found to have THC in his system at the time and a blood alcohol level of .03 percent.
He was originally charged with homicide murder, but that charge was reduced to "causing serious bodily injury while operating a vehicle with a controlled substance."
