SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The man rescued from the St. Joseph River in South Bend Monday night has died.

The man reported in critical condition at the hospital, and Indiana Conservation Officers say he was taken off life support at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Indiana Conservation Officers have identified the 57-year-old man thanks to several calls to the DNR tip line.

Witnesses say they saw him jump into the river shortly before 6:30 p.m. in South Bend.

Rescue boats were called out, and rescuers plunged into the ice water, near the bridge at Riverside and Darden Road.

The man was alive and floating close to shore when he was pulled from the water.
