Man breaks into home, shoots at elderly couple, gets attacked by police dog

A Pierceton man is behind bars accused of breaking into a Kosciusko County house and firing at its elderly owners.

The burglary, turned shooting, happened around 9:45 p.m. Monday in the 8900 block of E. County Road 500 North, about two miles southeast of North Webster.

Allen and Kathryn Streby arrived home to find an unknown maroon pick-up truck in their driveway, all their home lights on and a front window wide open.

Sensing something was wrong, the couple called their son Craig, who dialed 911 from his job at the American Legion Post 253 in North Webster.

Around that time, police say Aubert Clevenger, 30, of Pierceton walked out of the house with a 12 gauge shotgun in hand. He yelled at the couple to back out of the driveway, which they did. As the Streby’s pulled away, Clevenger shot at their car, hitting a tire and blowing off a hubcap.

Minutes later, Craig Streby arrived at his parent's house and was pointed in the direction Clevenger took off in. He miraculously caught-up with the armed burglar and directed police to their roving location via cellular phone.

Squad cars quickly intercepted the chase, which ended in a field near County Road 150 North and 650 East, when a Winona Lake canine unit named Bron tackled Clevenger to the ground.

Paramedics took him to Kosciusko Community Hospital for dog bites to his arm.

"It’s nice to know we have those units here. The dogs are really great, I liked it, I’m not going to lie,” Craig Streby said with a laugh.

The Streby's say they are everyday folks who don't own anything lavish and have no enemies. The family wonders if Clevenger was high on drugs, considering his abrasive demeanor. Narcotics tests were taken at the hospital; however those results won't be available for a week or so.

Clevenger, who has just one previous arrest in Kosciusko County, is preliminary charged with four felony crimes including Attempted Murder and Criminal Recklessness. Formal charges are expected Wednesday.
