Police stumbled upon a multi-million dollar car theft ring Monday, after pulling over a man for speeding.
Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Police pulled over Paul Abbott from Evanston, Illinois, for driving 87mph in a 70mph zone on U.S. 31. When Abbott failed to produce proper documentation for his Chrysler 300-series car, police discovered the vehicle was stolen.
It was part of a multi-million dollar car theft scheme, based in Illinois, involving forged vehicle identification number plates.
Police also suspect Abbott had drugs in the car. When they informed him that a drug dog was on the way, Abbott took off, pulling over again a short time later. Police believe he may have tossed evidence out the window in that time.
Two drug dogs focused in on a satchel in the car’s front seat, but no drug charges have been filed.
Abbott was booked for possession of a stolen vehicle and fleeing and eluding police.
He is also wanted on multiple warrants for his involvement in the theft ring.
