A 23-year-old man was arrested after police say he fired a sawed off shotgun in a South Bend neighborhood Monday afternoon.

It happened around 4 p.m. in a neighborhood near the intersection of Lincolnway West and College Street.

Police received a call that a man with a shotgun fired his gun and then went back inside a home on the 900 block of College Street. He stayed at the home for close to ten minutes.

Officers were able to talk the man out of the house. He was taken into custody.

"Officers surrounded the house and got on the PA system and after about 10 minutes talked him out. We got three people out. One subject was arrested," said Sgt. Chuck Stokes of the South Bend Police Department.

Police found three people inside the home, but only charged the man who allegedly fired the gun.

"He's going to be charged with criminal recklessness and we're doing further investigation, but there's a possibility he might have been firing at a neighbors dog," he said.

No one was hurt in the incident.

The man was taken to St. Joseph County Jail, and police are continuing to investigate to find out why the gun was fired.
