Man accused of fatal bicycle accident formally charged

Mishawaka, Ind. The man accused of leaving the scene of a fatal bicycle accident has been formally charged.

Years after his grandfather spent time in jail for another deadly accident.

Brandon Gonzales, 22, appeared via closed circuit TV at his arraignment yesterday.

He faces three felony charges including, "leaving the scene of a deadly accident while operating intoxicated."

Gonzales hit and killed bicyclist Timothy Grant, 54, while driving along East Jefferson road Saturday morning.

Gonzales reportedly sped off instead of stopping, crashing his car outside his parent's home about four miles away.

Court documents indicate that car had heavy front end damage, including a broken windshield and dented roof.

There was also blood and human tissue on the exterior.

Back in May 2009, Brandon Gonzales' maternal grandfather --- Leroy Hoover, 56, --- hit two Mishawaka sisters walking near the corner of Dodge Avenue and 11th Street.

The four and six-year-old girls died from their injuries.

Tests found traces of marijuana in Hoover's system.

A judge ultimately sentenced him to sixty days in jail and suspended his driver's license.
