Low cost pet clinic is moving to South Bend

SOUTH BEND A low cost clinic in Michiana is moving. Pet Refuge ABC spay and neuter clinic serves 700 cats and dogs every month. The goal of a new and bigger facility is to treat even more.

Pet Refuge will close on the new facility, located next to the shelter on Burnett Drive, in May, and they hope to open by fall. The current facility in Granger will remain open throughout the move and renovation process.

Ten employees will move from Granger to the new facility when it opens in the fall. Staff hopes once they are settled, they'll bring on more employees.

The clinic won't cost taxpayers anything, but Pet Refuge is paying a $200,000 for the new building, a worthy cost, according to staff.

"The location is going to be a lot more convenient for a lot of our clientele but more important it's going to be bigger," said Kari Hatch, the Medical Director at the clinic. "Ideally, we'll be able to get an additional doctor and offer more surgeries in a day, because right now we have a longer wait period than I'd like."

The wait time for current patients is at least 30 days. Staff hopes a new facility will lower that time to a maximum of two weeks.

"We'll have what we feel is a more central location here in the city of South Bend," said Pam Comer, President of Pet Refuge. "The other idea is we'll be able to do more surgeries in a more timely manner."
