'Lovers' quarrel' reportedly triggers overnight SWAT standoff

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A situation involving the South Bend SWAT Team lasted for hours but ended peacefully early Sunday morning.

A 911 call placed around midnight stated a person inside a home in the 700 block of 28th Street had a gun and was going to shoot himself, the homeowner, who was not involved, told NewsCenter 16. Police on the scene confirmed this information.

After a SWAT team searched the home, police discovered there was no one inside. Police were clear of the area by 3 a.m.

The homeowner was familiar with both the person who made the 911 call and the man who was reportedly suicidal. He described the situation as a "lovers' quarrel."

A portion of 28th Street was closed for about three hours as police used a bullhorn to call out to the man who they were told was inside the house.
