ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. The Tampa Bay Rays say former major league manager, coach and player Don Zimmer has died. He was 83.

Zimmer was an All-Star player for the Cubs in 1961 and managed the Cubbies from 1988-1991, winning National League Manager of the Year honors in 1989 when he led the North Siders to a division title.

He also managed the Padres, Red Sox and Rangers.

Zimmer became a popular fixture as the Yankees bench coach during New York's World Series run in the 1990's and 2000's.

Zimmer died Wednesday. He had been in a rehabilitation center in Florida since having heart surgery in mid-April.

Zimmer spent more than 60 years in baseball. He was a senior adviser for the Rays.
