The Chicago Marathon is scheduled to get underway early Sunday morning, but one local runner decided to almost double that distance for her Saturday morning run.

Holly Young finished 50 miles in one day to support Hello Gorgeous! – a non-profit that offers free makeovers to women battling cancer. She completed the course in about 12 hours, with a few small breaks for hydration and stretching.

Young’s fundraising effors were inspired by the memory of her good friend, Kathy Gribbin, who lost her fight with ovarian cancer back in February.

"Kathy was just a really funny person and think she would be in a car behind Holly -- screaming and running and laughing and just pushing her and praying for Holly along the way," said Holly's brother, Chuck Fry. "I really feel like you can feel her today.

Young started her “Live Fully 50” run at the Beehive Salon in South Bend where she crossed the finish line around 8 p.m. Saturday evening.

"Since I’ve done so many marathons I decided I just wanted to go bigger and challenge myself a little more,” Young said. “I took this training a lot more seriously. It's obviously a lot further. It's just more meaningful for me."

Young’s goal was to raise $10,000 for the organization. Before her run even began, however, whe had exceeded that goal by collecting $15,000.

"I love her so much and today I'm finding out that so many people do, too," said Fry. "And its really, really cool that people came out early people have been coming out at the Beehive in droves following her and honking."

There was a whole gang of people waiting for her at the finish line Saturday night. She was even had a fire truck escort for the last lap of her journey.

"I am amazed at the stengnth and the will and the human spirit that I watched today," said Kim Becker, co-founder of Hello Gorgeous! "I can't imagine what it's taken to do what shes's done today and it means so much to me what she's done for the women that we've had the opportunity to help. She's a poster child for the human spirit."
