An Elkhart native died in New Orleans, just hours after seeing his nephew play in the super bowl.
Reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth say Bryan Young and his wife Alice were hit by a drunk driver just six hours after the game, as they left New Orleans around 5a.m Monday.
Both vehicles caught fire, but the driver of the other car escaped with minor injuries.
The couple posed for a photo with their nephew, Delanie Walker, the night of the game. Walker is a tight end for the San Francisco 49ers.
Young joined the U.S. Marine’s after college and moved to California, but he would visit his mother in Elkhart twice a year. He celebrated his 54th birthday in that community in October.
The couple will be buried in California, but the family will hold a memorial service in Elkhart. The date has not yet been decided.
Bryan Young had three sons and two daughters and Alice Young had two sons and one daughter.
