Local hospital honors fallen firefighters

One local hospital took time Tuesday to honor members of the elite hotshot team, killed last month while battling a wildfire in Arizona.

Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center held a memorial service for the 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hot-Shots. They were killed June 30.

The hospital also took time to remember five Plymouth firefighters who were killed in the line of duty 31 years ago. They died after their truck overturned on the way to a house fire.

"I know exactly how they felt out in Arizona,” says Former Fire Chief of the Plymouth Fire Dept. Wayne Smith. “The same way I felt here for years. You know, believe it or not, I still think about that every time the alarm goes off when we have to a fire or an incident."

A bell was rung for each firefighter honored at Tuesday's service.

The Plymouth Fire Department will also hold a memorial service Sunday for the five local firefighters.
