Local group tries to save Howard Park

SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- While we await Transpo’s decision on which proposal they’ll choose for the former site on Northside Boulevard, community members around Howard Park want their voices heard before any decisions are made that could change the landscape.

“Transpo and the board members need to know about this and that it’s unacceptable,” Karen Schefmeyer, secretary of the Howard Park/East Bank Neighborhood Association said. “What we want is a traditional neighborhood. This is South Bend, Indiana not San Francisco. We want something to stand the test of time. We think it’s wrong to cut roads through a historical park that’s been around for hundreds of years.”

Schefmeyer started a petition about two weeks ago and has received over 600 signatures since.

“We’ve started a ‘Save Howard Park’ petition,” Karen Schefmeyer, Secretary of Howard Park/East Bank Neighborhood Association said. “You can sign the petition online at www.savehowardpark.com.”

One of the fears of the association is losing the outdoor ice rink in Howard Park.

“The ice rink is 50 years old,” John Stratigos, owner of Barnaby’s said. “Families say they love ice skating there and having hot chocolate afterwards. I’d hate to see the ice rink leave Howard Park but I’d love to see the green space preserved. Perhaps, Howard Park can be developed. There was a plan for a new family activity center with the ice rink. I think that would be wonderful with Howard Park being reinvented.”

If you would like to sign the petition to save Howard Park, you can do so at www.savehowardpark.com and if you would like a “Save Howard Park” t-shirt, they are available for purchase at Embroid Me on North Ironwood.
