One South Bend community was transformed into a landscaper’s paradise today thanks to some generous volunteers.

Three homeowners were treated to a brand new look for their yards Saturday morning, after being chosen in the Near Northwest Neighborhood’s Extreme Garden Makeover Contest.

Dozens of residents donated their time and landscaping expertise to help the winners’ dreams of colorful flowers and green leaves become a reality.

“A lot of them were first time homeowners who had just bought a house and just really didn't have a feel for how to do something on their own, so we were able to kind of help them and get them square,” said Karen Ainsley, executive director of Near Northwest Neighborhood, Inc. “So not only did the neighborhood landscape architect meet with them and talk about plans and talk about plants they'd like to see but also we've been able to work with them and kind of talk about maintenance and how to take care of things in the future, so I think it'll be a win-win for everyone down the road.”

This is the first time the makeover contest has been held.
