Local business gave away free books Saturday

A Mishawaka-based company gave kids the gift of reading Saturday, by giving away 50,000 books. Children of all ages got the chance to fill up bags with books, all at no cost.

Better World Books decided to celebrate their 10 years of growth by giving back to the community, turning the old Borders location into an open-call for bookworms. The goal was to get kids excited to open up a new book.

“There is nothing like the look on a kids face when they get a book and say wait I actually get to keep this?” says John Ujda the vice president of marketing for Better World Books. “That is precious to see we are seeing it today all along. That is why we do it.”

“There is no restrictions,” says Louann Kensinger a South Bend teacher. “I showed my ID and I got a box and they handed my grandchildren bags and we are filling them up.”

Teachers were even allowed to get a double-helping of books for their classrooms.
