Lightning strike knocks bark off tree

While overnight storms brought some desperately needed rain to much of the area, a drenched lawn wasn’t the only thing one Michiana family woke up to Thursday morning.

A massive lightning bolt lit up the sky outside Maria Singleton's Clay Twp. home just before one this morning.

She said she knew something had been hit, but did not realize just how close it actually was to her home until the next morning, when she found chunks of bark scattered across her yard.

The lightning struck the side of her neighbor's tree, sending pieces of wood flying roughly 100’ to behind her home.

“All of a sudden, just a big boom hit, everything lit up white, you know, everything shook, and I'm like, 'oh my god',” said Singleton.

“It hit the top of the tree, came down, and there's a hole in the ground where the lightning went down through the tree,” she said. ”It was a good bolt to where it lit up everything and just rocked everybody last night.”

Despite the mess it made, she says she's thankful no one was hurt.
