On Tuesday, Concord Mall in Elkhart, will host a Backpack Stuffing event to preapre for the 2013 Lemonade Day event, which takes place on May 4th.
Organizers expect over 1,000 kids in Elkhart County to participate in Lemonade Day, so volunteers plan to stuff at least 2,000 backpacks full of materials like pens, sticky notes, workbooks, and calculators- all items intended to help someone start and operate their own business.
The event is community-wide, with volunteers from schools, businesses, and community groups, all helping to make it happen.
"Lemonade Day" started in Texas, but has spread nation-wide to over 30 cities, including 7 in Indiana. Local organziers say Elkhart is the pefect host city, because of it's "entrepreneur spirit." The idea is an experiemental learning program to teach youth how to start, own and operate their own businesses.
According to the national motto, "the foremost objective of Lemonade Day is to empower youth to take ownership of their lives and become productive members of society – the business leaders, social advocates, volunteers, and forward-thinking citizens of tomorrow."
Kids can still get involved, open registration starts in March. Visit Elkhart Lemonade Day's Facebook Page to learn more.
