Lakeville Fire Department holds yard sale fighting bankruptcy

A volunteer fire department is nearly broke and counting on the kindness of the town to help them out.

Saturday night Lakeville fire department is holding a town wide yard sale, hoping to raise some money.

At least 50 businesses have contributed.

Property taxes have declined the past couple of years so cutbacks to equipment have been made yet still an operating budget is needed to for fuel, maintenance and uniforms.

Money raised will tide the department over until state funds arrive in June of 2014.

“Frankly had we not got the promise of these funds next year we would have definitely had to let the fireman go,” says Union Township trustee Bill Stroup. “But since we got it, we decided to figure out how to make this thing work.”

The fire department is holding the yard sale Saturday night at 5:30 at the Wilson Field in Lakeville.
