Lake-effect snow causes headache for morning commute

South Bend Lake-effect snow is covering the Michiana area, making your commute a headache Wednesday morning and it’s just in time for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is one of the biggest times to travel but it could be very dangerous with this weather. The toll road was seeing slick spots between mile marker 33 and 80. Luckily, there were no accidents reported.

St. Joseph County was a different story. NewsCenter 16 was told there were numerous slide-offs, fender benders and cars in ditches.

As of about 8:30 a.m., INDOT says, “roads are improving quickly across the Northwest District this morning. The heaviest hit area was along the LaPorte/St. Joseph County line where around 6" fell. Nearly everyone else saw a few inches. Road conditions are mostly clear or slushy. Some roads are still snow-covered in a few places. And the more rural roads are seeing some blowing snow which is making clearing tricky. Slow down out there.”

Stay with NewsCenter 16 for road and weather updates throughout the day.
