A LaPorte man has been arrested for child neglect and public intoxication, at a football practice.
It happened Thursday at Kesling Middle School during a Pop Warner football practice.
Police were called to investigate an intoxicated parent at the practice. When they arrived, they found 39-year-old Lance Dieken yelling on the field. Police say he had trouble balancing and smelled of alcohol.
They also found a 7-year-old inside a red GMC Sierra pick-up truck. The truck's engine was on.
Dieken said he left the truck running because he was picking up his 6-year-old son from practice. When asked how he planned to get home, he allegedly told police he was going to drive.
Officers advised him that he would not be allowed to drive due to his impaired state.
Dieken was taken into custody on charges of child neglect, D felony and public intoxication, B misdemeanor.
The children's mother was contacted and arrived at the scene to take custody of the children.
A copy of the report was forwarded to Child Protective Services.
