Kroc Fest 2013 held Saturday

South Bend, Ind. As students get ready to head back to class after summer break parents across the area have been tasked with finding all of the items their kids need to succeed.

That's why the Kroc Center teamed up with the South Bend Community School Corporation Saturday to help ease those back-to-school pressures that so many families face every year.

Thousands came out for Kroc Fest 2013, where backpacks filled with supplies were passed out to children in need.

Kids enjoyed carnival games, face painting and powder-puff football during their last weekend of freedom before they have to hit the books once again.

And thanks to the generosity of the community and volunteers they'll be returning to class prepared.

“For the parents who have been able to receive backpacks they are just so overwhelmed and amazed at how grateful people are and how faithful,” says Sharon Dutkowski the program & membership director at the Kroc Center. “It really is by the grace of God that we are able to do this and we are happy to share this but we have an amazing team and over 100 volunteers helping today.”

Organizers say more than 5,000 people stopped throughout the day. That's more than double the amount that attended last year.
