Kayak lessons held Sunday on the St. Joseph River

South Bend, Ind. Folks were out learning how to kayak on the St. Joseph River Sunday. The participants are beginners learning how to how to properly canoe and kayak for recreational or athletic purposes.

A dozen kayakers practiced how to kayak or canoe up and down the river at St. Patrick's Park.

They started in a classroom setting identifying and learning the basics, then discussed safety and eventually moved into the large practice pond.

“The first class in June was maybe three times this level and there was a little more power, more power out there that paddler's navigate, negotiate and figure out how to manage,” says Ted Beatty a canoe and kayak instructor. “So, it's a great transition going from the pond to the river."

The lesson also taught paddling strokes and techniques and gave those a chance to canoe or kayak against the current.
