Inmates at Starke Co. Jail: our civil rights are being violated

Starke Co., Ind. Inmates at the Starke County Jail say overcrowding is violating their civil rights, and now county officials are taking action.

The county has agreed to accept the mediation agreement, which means only 62 inmates can be in the jail at a time, and areas other than cells can't be used to house prisoners.

According to our reporting partners at WKVI, the agreement also includes female inmate searches done by women only, and weekly outdoor recreation time.

Starke County is planning to build a new jail facility just east of Knox in the near future.
