Indiana's next Do Not Call deadline fast approaching

If you want to avoid pesky telemarketers, time is running out to get on Indiana's Do Not Call list.

The next quarterly deadline is this Tuesday, May 21.

On Friday, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller announced the top three telemarketing calls Hoosiers receive. He says illegitimate businesses and scammers skirt the Do Not Call law by trying to deceive people with phony sales pitches.

1. Card services - these calls come from a woman saying she is from "Cardholder Services," offering to lower their credit card interest rates. Officials say to hang up because if you go through the steps, they'll likely charge you an upfront payment without any intention of providing services or a refund.
2. Home security - Consumers are receiving automated calls mentioning an FBI report on the number of home break-ins. The caller offers a free home security system; but officials say that's not the case, these telemarketers will only take your information and sell it to a home security company.
3. Sweepstakes scams – The caller will claim you've won a big prize, but you have to pay a fee to get it, typically by wiring money through places like Western Union. The problem is, you won't get the prize or your money back.
