INDIANAPOLIS Indiana is part of a wave of states moving to crack down on youth tanning following a 2012 California ban for anyone under 18.

The Indiana House voted 69-23 on Thursday to ban tanning for those younger than 16.

California and Vermont first passed the most stringent laws banning tanning for anyone under 18 in 2012. Illinois, Nevada, Oregon and Texas followed suit the next year, and nearly every state has moved to restrict or ban tanning among minors since then.

Currently, anyone under 16 needs parent or guardian supervision to tan in Indiana. Seventeen- and 18-year-olds need permission to go alone.

The bill now moves back to the Senate for one last round of review.
