Mishawaka, Ind. A man led police in a car chase across state lines Friday afternoon -- and all for a pair of blue jeans.
Mishawaka police say 42-year-old Brian White allegedly stole a pair of blue jeans from a Mishawaka Meijer on Grape Road.
The call came in just after 4 p.m. An officer attempted to stop White's vehicle near the intersection of Grape and Edison Rds.
"They put out a description of the truck and one of the officers found it and attempted to stop it -- and it took off on him," said Capt. Pasquale Rulli of the Mishawaka Police Dept.
Mishawaka's pursuit ended minutes after it began, for safety reasons.
"They knew why they were chasing him and they had enough information that it could have been followed up by detectives," Rulli said. "It's not worth getting into a wreck over."
But a St. Joseph County officer picked up on the pursuit through the vehicle's description, following the car North into Niles.
It was near the intersection of Adams and Ironwood that the suspect hit another vehicle. Police say no one was seriously injured in that crash.
Just down the road, north of Stateline Rd, the pursuit ended and police took White into custody. He is being held at the Cass County Jail and will be arraigned on Monday.
He could face charges in both states. Preliminary charges out of Mishawaka include shoplifting, fleeing the police and many traffic violations.
The passenger in the vehicle ran from the car and there is no word yet on his location.
