Elkhart firefighters rescue two pets in home fire

A fire broke out Tuesday in the 700 block of Middlebury St. in Elkhart.

Fire crews were called at 9:47 p.m. Tuesday following 911 calls of a house fully engulfed.

Fire crews from six engines and one ladder truck arrived to find heavy smoke and flames pouring from two sides of the home.

At first firefighters took a defensive exterior attack, but later went inside to rescue two pets. One dog died in the blaze.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but the family does have insurance. An estimated 75 percent of the home was damaged.
