South Bend Police recognized several of their finest officers on Sunday at the department’s eleventh annual awards ceremony.
Officers and their families and friends gathered at the Palais Royale in downtown South Bend for the early afternoon ceremony.
Over 50 police men and women were honored for their services to the city, receiving awards of prestige like the “Chief’s Award of Valor,” the “South Bend Police Medal” and “Community Problem Solving.”
Anthony Dawson, patrolman, first class, was named “Officer of the Year” in his sixth year on the force.
"First of all, I'm humbled, I'm honored that they selected me. There’s 200 other officers they could have picked to be officer of the year” said Dawson.
Being a member of the police department is a “family business,” for Dawson. His father is a retired officer, and both his brother and his wife are officers.
