'Honey from the Hood' wins national awards

South Bend South Bend's very own "Honey from the Hood" is making headlines again after taking home two awards from the American Beekeeping Federation conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

This group has competed in several competitions before but this is the first time they competed in a national competition.

The idea to compete started after Tim Ives won a state competition. After that Ives was asked what was next and he said nationals, but he couldn’t afford to go. So, with the help of the community and a public campaign they were able to raise enough money for them to go.

During the conference they jumped around to several beekeeping classes and met with a bunch of beekeepers throughout the nation. They also participated in a few competitions. Two types of their honey ended up winning third place, blueberry and wildflower.

Ives says they certainly learned a lot from going to this competition. He says they will make a few changes and compete again.
