SOUTH BEND Homes were evacuated in the middle of the night, after a driver ran into the gas meter on the side of a house.

Before midnight, the car was driving in an alley in the 2200 block of Pleasant Street in South Bend. It hit the meter and broke the shut off valve.

Four homes had to be evacuated because of the leak.

Utility crews dug into the ground and pinched off the line, so they could replace the broken valve. They'll have to do more tests before turning the gas back on, but residents were allowed back into their homes early Tuesday morning.
