Home sales across St. Joseph County were fantastic in 2012 compared to previous years.

The county overall saw a 12 percent.

Broken out by community, Granger carried most of the upward trend, selling 27 percent more homes in 2012 than in 2011. Elkhart follows with a 26 percent increase. South Bend and Mishawaka both improved sales by 12 percent.

Those homes were also on the market for a shorter period than in 2011 -- 103 days in 2012, compared to 119 days in 2011.

The price of the homes sold remained level across the county.

Local realtors say these numbers are unlike any they've seen in recent years.

The National Association of realtors says sales of existing homes last year reached $4.6 million. That's the highest level in five years.

Analysts says sales were boosted by record-low mortgage rates and improving employment.

More home sales mean fewer houses on the market, which pushes up prices.
