SOUTH BEND Every month we like to reach out to South Bend Common Council members to talk about the latest issues affecting the city and its residents.

On Friday morning, we were joined by South Bend Councilman Henry Davis Jr.

He has faced criticism recently for controversial social media posts, prompting our news anchor Tricia Sloma to ask: "Has anyone sat down and advised you, 'Just stay off of social media for awhile'?"

"I've gotten those comments," Davis admitted. "But obviously that would take away from my ability to communicate with my constituents. I've been a magnet for this for quite some time."

"A magnet because you're putting it out there," Sloma interjected.

"When I signed up, I signed up to make sure that we didn't revisit the status quo when I became a council member. Since I was elected into office in '08, there has been one thing after another because I voice my opinion and I make sure that my constituents are getting what they need and what they're looking for. Obviously these type of hits are going to come up when you are doing what is necessary for your constituency base."

"Do you have some people, though, that you turn to and say, 'Hey, do you think this is okay to put on Facebook? Do you think this is okay to tweet?" Sloma asked.

"I'm doing that a lot more," Davis admitted. "Obviously, because of some of the things that are coming up. However, I think it's necessary that I continue to focus in on what's necessary and what's proper when you're communicating with your constituency base. We're going to do things that are probably more unpopular at times, but at the same time we have to really revisit why we're there in office. I'm there to represent a constituency base that has obviously not gotten what they needed over time, and here we are talking about things that really don't matter."
