Gunite Corp. announced plans Wednesday to consolidate its operations in Rockford, Ill. and close its Elkhart facility.
Two years ago Gunite considered consolidation, but decided against it after an increase in orders.
"Actually we're kind of fortunate in still working right now," said Karl Odermyer, an employee at Gunite. "We've been here a long time, they're like family. But, what are you going to do? A job is a job. You do it to make money, ain't doing it here, you'll be doing it somewhere else. So I just hope I land a job somewhere else so I don't have to suffer too much."
Gunite plans to transfer jobs in phases beginning on Sept. 23 and continue through the end of the year.
"It's going to hit me pretty hard. I just qualified for a loan. I was closing in the next two weeks for it. And it was a brand new house, something me and my family have been wanting to put together for our whole life. To hear this, yeah it puts an impact on me," said employee Brandon Terlap.
The Elkhart facility produces machined brake drums and hubs, drum-hub assemblies and spoke wheels for customers in the commercial vehicle industry.
Most employees are expected to receive a severance. Some may take jobs at other sites at another company within Accuride Corp., which owns Gunite.
